GuideA guide published by Dotto
Trailers, caravans, boats and jet skis have registration rules of their own, apart from the car that tows them. Victoria’s boat registration page puts it plainly: the trailer you use to tow your vessel needs to be registered separately. This guide follows those rules in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland, one page at a time, from each state’s own pages.
General information, not legal advice. Registration is done with each state’s own agency, and each agency’s page is listed at the foot of each page. Where this guide and that page differ, the page is right.
Each plate is a full guide. The drawings stand in for numbers: no plate on this site carries a real registration.
Each of the three states splits the work a little differently. In Victoria, VicRoads issues boat registration labels on behalf of Safe Transport Victoria, which sets the marine safety rules. In Queensland, the Department of Transport and Main Roads registers boats, and a boat 15 metres or longer needs Maritime Safety Queensland’s endorsement first.
| What | New South Wales | Victoria | Queensland |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trailers and caravans | Registered at a Service NSW centre, with an inspection report. | Registered with VicRoads; some small light trailers are exempt. | Registered with Transport and Main Roads; new registrations cannot be made online. |
| Boats and jet skis | Transport for NSW (Maritime); applications go to a service centre. | Registered with VicRoads every 12 months. | Registered with Transport and Main Roads. |
| Boat and jet ski licences | A general boat licence, then a personal watercraft (PWC) licence. | A marine licence from VicRoads, with a PWC endorsement for jet skis. | A recreational marine licence and a personal watercraft licence. |
| Older vehicles through a club | The Historic Vehicle Scheme and the Classic Vehicle Scheme. | The club permit scheme. | The Special Interest Vehicle Concession Scheme. |
The other states and territories run their own schemes, with their own thresholds and forms. This guide does not summarise them; here are the agencies’ own pages.
registration.net.au is a guide published by Dotto to registering trailers, caravans, boats and jet skis, to boat and personal watercraft licences, and to the club schemes for older vehicles, in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. It is not a government website. Every rule here comes from the agency page linked beside it, and where this guide and that page differ, the page is right.
